East Jerusalem family forced out of home at gunpoint

Palestine: East Jerusalem family forced out of home at gunpoint

Jerusalem, (PNN): At dawn Sunday the Israeli occupying authority in East Jerusalem evacuated by force the Kurdi family.

Other residents of the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, recently under nearly continual siege, were prevented from approaching the immediate area which was declared a “closed military zone.” The family was taken from their home at gunpoint.

On the street via telephone the Kurdi family described a “large force enhanced by police and the army.”

Advisor to Prime Minister Salam Fayyad on Jerusalem Affairs, Hatem Abdel Qader, said the forced evacuation was predatory. “The occupation authorities took advantage of the absence of citizens sitting in solidarity with the family to force them out.” It was early morning and residents were sleeping after days of standing vigil to protect the house.

The Palestinian official was not able to reach the family as Israeli forces filled the streets and prevented citizens from joining them or providing any type of assistance.

Abdel Qader said, “The crime committed by the occupation authorities against the residents of Jerusalem will not undermine our determination to continue to defend the rest of the homes of the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, the 27 threatened with eviction in favor of a Jewish neighborhood.”
